WHAT IS LYMPHEDEMA
Lymphedema is a condition that afflicts more than 250,000 women and men in the United States and requires specialized treatment. Lymphedema is swelling caused by an ineffective lymph system that leads to chronic fluid buildup usually in the arms and legs.
At our Therapy Centers we have two certified lymphedema therapists. They will provide you with a comfortable and caring environment to receive your care. Their programs are result–oriented and focused on meeting your specific needs.
WHAT CAUSES LYMEPHEDEMA?
It is most frequently seen after lymph node dissection, surgery and/or radiation therapy, in which damage to the lymphatic system is caused during the treatment of cancer, most notably breast cancer. In many cancer patients this condition does not develop until months or even years after their therapy has concluded. Lymphedema may also be associated with accidents or certain diseases or problems that may inhibit the lymphatic system from functioning properly, such as chronic venous insufficiency, obesity, inflammation, scarring, and infections.
CURRENT TREATMENTS FOR LYMPHEDEMA
Although lymphedema is not curable at this time, it is quite often manageable. Planning of the treatment program by a licensed occupational or physical therapist depends on the cause of the lymphedema. The most recommended treatment plan called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) – the gold standard of conservative lymphedema management consists of manual lymphatic drainage massage, bandaging, proper skin care and diet, compression garments, therapeutic exercises, and self-manual lymphatic drainage.
